There is almost an unlimited number of choices and decisions when designing your bathroom. Not even 10 years ago most places had 5 vanities to choose from, a few tiles and a handful of sanitaryware options. Now there are thousands to pick from; in different styles, colours, materials, etc. Not only are we spoiled for choice, but there is also a lot of inspiration online that sometimes it’s hard to piece together the style you like most.
We want to show you all different styles and how we would create a bathroom to suit. Starting with ‘Cottage Core’, a more traditional bathroom but with contemporary twists.
There are a few key components that make up this kind of bathroom; natural, traditional and texture.
Natural
Keeping your colour schemes more earthy, warm & neutral colours is always our go to when looking at a bathroom with this style in mind. Cream, green, taupe and black are the most popular to choose from, however, we tend to recommend a more muted version of all these colours. It is key reason to why ‘pure brilliant white’ is not listed, this style of bathroom should be warmer, if white is what you’re looking for try and off white with warmer undertones.
In keeping with the natural theme, within this style we see a lot of natural materials, such as mid-tone woods, light stones and limewashing. Anything that give off a more earthy atmosphere.
Traditional
Sanitaryware is often an aspect we look past. Traditional is the way to go when it comes to creating a modern cottage style bathroom. This style of tapware etc. gives your bathroom much more character. A brass will always fit perfectly here and fits in with also keeping your bathroom warm, however, a lot of people worry about caring for brass sanitaryware, in this case we would recommend chrome or a brushed nickel.
A point to note that staying traditional doesn’t mean ‘old fashioned’ – utilizing the correct colours and textures can be the difference between a modern cottage and a dark old bathroom.
Texture
Texture is very important. You’ll notice that in the inspiration image the majority of surfaces are all matt, with a sprinkling of the odd gloss tile – this is very intentional. Matt is more muted than gloss and overall tends to look more expensive. So, when designing your bathroom look I not matt vanity units and tiles.
You may also notice the range of different materials used. A big trend with this style is not over tile your bathroom and leaning towards more wall panelling and paint to add character to your bathroom. A tiled patterned floor or stone flooring would fit perfectly depending how bold you would like to be. Within your wet area we would option for either a stone look like or smaller square coloured tile, the rest of the bathroom could be shiplap panelling in your desired colour.
